With their graceful curves, the Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Centre, designed by the world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, stand as two of the most iconic symbols of modern Baku. At the same time, the capital’s historical treasure, Icherisheher (the Old City), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies at the very heart of the race circuit, ready to be discovered during breaks between the thrilling stages of the competition.
Seaside Boulevard, stretching along the longest straight of the race circuit, gracefully guides visitors to the Caspian Sea. Along this scenic route, you’ll find plenty to see and do: the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, crafted in the shape of a rolled-up carpet; the Baku Ferris Wheel, offering breathtaking views of the track; and the YARAT Contemporary Art Centre, just a little further down the boulevard.
For those eager to explore beyond the city center, short excursions promise exciting discoveries. Here’s our guide to experiencing the very best of Baku and its surroundings during the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Even hotter than events on the track is the burning mountain at Yanardag, which has been alight for centuries, fueled by underground natural gas vents. Such a rare phenomenon so close to the centre of Baku simply has to be witnessed in person! Taking a tour of Yanardag on off-road electric scooters, led by a guide, is a novel and exciting way to experience this unusual landscape, which will offer unforgettable moments to both travel and landscape lovers.
Staying on the theme of fire, a little further away is Ateshgah Fire Temple, a mysterious site originally revered by Zoroastrians and recently preserved to capture its magical atmosphere. Soak up its history and gaze into the entrancing flames in this fascinating archeological complex.
Step back in time and explore Baku’s UNESCO-listed Icherisheher (Old City). Wander along narrow winding alleys, marvel at ancient stone inscriptions and visit landmarks like the cryptic Maiden Tower and resplendent Shirvanshahs' Palace. Admire traditional architecture and shop for souvenirs at local boutiques. Don't miss the opportunity to experience Azerbaijan's rich cultural heritage in this charming historic spot.
For a taste of Azerbaijani cuisine in authentic surroundings, head to Icherisheher's Mugham Club and Qaynana. If you're looking for a range of regional dishes, Chayki and Mangal Steak House are just a short walk along Baku Boulevard. With a more international atmosphere, Baku Café at Port Baku is conveniently located near the F1 grid. Finally, for a truly unique dining experience, Agabala Restaurant, right by the track, specialises in Azerbaijani folk cuisine from the 19th century.
Experience Baku’s vibrant nightlife
Experience Baku’s vibrant jazz scene, unwind at buzzing wine bars and dance the night away to international DJs at some of the region’s liveliest clubs. For an adrenaline-fueled night out, head to Enerji Club - a multi-level venue with landscaped terraces overlooking the Caspian Sea. If you're after a more relaxed atmosphere, KEFLI Local Wine & Snacks is the perfect spot to sample a variety of Azerbaijani wines while enjoying a laid-back vibe.
At the very tip of the famous Absheron peninsula is this national park, where you can stroll among the sandy nature with the Caspian surrounding you on both sides. The nearest Azerbaijani national park to Baku, this serves as a perfect place to rest and recuperate from the roar of the racing. Birders who visit this remote part of the Absheron Peninsula will be rewarded with sightings of a wealth of water fowl and waders.
To the south-west of Baku is this fascinating site of ancient history. At Gobustan State Reserve, you can explore the expansive territory for messages from our ancestors in an area of ancient habitation full of rock art and engravings. Here you can also wonder at the easternmost ancient Roman inscription, made by a Roman soldier in the 1st century AD.
Whether you’re a horse lover who cannot bear being away from your beloved animal for long or a complete beginner, what better way to spend time in breaks during the Grand Prix than trotting or galloping around? Conveniently a short trip from Baku centre, this is a convenient activity for F1 fans with little time to spare. Horseback riding, pony trekking and even the opportunity of fishing - all that awaits you at the Omar Riding Club!
Surrounding Gobustan are several sites to see many mud volcanoes, which is the densest concentration of such wonders of nature in the world! Glare at the bubbling pools and collect some notoriously healthy mud to take back to Baku. While some of the F1 drivers will get their hands on erupting bottles of champagne, you might be able to see your own gushing mud volcano!
