magnificently adornedGulustan Mausoleum
This mausoleum, located near the village of Gulustan in Julfa District, captivates with its rare design and construction elements. The sublime ornamentation that decorates it is a sight to behold! The exact date of the mausoleum's construction is unknown, but the building techniques suggest it dates to the 12th century. The structure stands out among other Nakhchivan architectural monuments for the diversity of its patterns and their symbolic meanings, which hold a special place among the wonders of medieval Azerbaijani architecture.
The building consists of two principal parts – the crypt and the mausoleum itself. In total, the mausoleum has 12 sides and is covered in delicate ornamentation. Its unique feature is that, from a distance, the patterns seem to have different shapes yet, up close, it is apparent that they are repeating. Interestingly, the architectural style of the Gulustan Mausoleum is similar to many historical buildings of the Seljuk era, and its geometric patterns resonate with other globally significant sites of the Ajami school of architecture.
