retracing the footstepsof Jalil Mammadguluzadeh
The great and enlightened Azerbaijani writer, journalist and founder of the famous literary and artistic satirical magazine ‘Molla Nasreddin’ was born in 1866 in Nakhchivan. Here, he began on his unparalleled path to creating a literary legacy that left an indelible mark on the cultural history of Azerbaijan.
The journey into the creative world of this outstanding writer should begin with the 19th-century architectural monument of Jalil Mammadguluzadeh House Museum. Here, over 3,000 exhibits reflecting the life and work of the writer are on display. Among them, personal items of the author himself and his family are of particular interest, including various documents relating to the writer's contemporaries and first editions of ‘Molla Nasreddin’ magazine.
Equally noteworthy are the Jalil Mammadguluzadeh memorial museums in the Jalilkend Village and Nehram Settlement. The museum in Jalilkend was created in 1987 as a branch of the Jalil Mammadguluzadeh Museum of Literature, where the author once worked. It began operating independently in 2013, and in 2015 was relocated to a new building. The second museum, situated in the settlement of Nehram, was originally a school where the writer taught. From 1989, the educational institution began to function as a museum. The collections of both museums include over 1,000 exhibits: personal items of the wordsmith, works written by him over the years, various issues of ‘Molla Nasreddin’ and much more.
In the city of Nakhchivan, you can also visit the Jalil Mammadguluzadeh Nakhchivan State National Drama Theatre and the Jalil Mammadguluzadeh Museum of Literature of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
From his house museum to the sites connected with Jalil Mammadguluzadeh’s works, each place has become a unique monument to his genius. Visiting them will allow you to immerse yourself in the writer’s world and absorb the atmosphere of the times when he lived and created.
