learn to make halvain Sheki
One of Azerbaijan’s travel gems, Sheki is full of history, culture, natural beauty, and culinary secrets. Speaking of which, the city is synonymous with its halva, the local take on pakhlava which is super sweet and consists of layers of rishta stuffed with sugar, hazelnuts, coriander, cardamom and saffron with a large covering of syrup.
It is made and sold by local family-run businesses, whose sweet shops are colourful sights around the historic parts of the city. By visiting 'Azizoghlu Sheki Shirniyyatlari' and 'Aliovsat Shirniyyat Evi', you can experience hands-on masterclasses in the art of making traditional Sheki halva. On special occasions, you can also join halva-making masterclasses at 'Halvachi Yahya', 'Aliahmad', and 'Galarsan-Gorarsan' sweet shops. There you’ll witness and take part in all the steps to expertly craft the delicious confection, from preparing the rice dough and drizzling with honey and sugary syrup to decorating, tasting, and packaging the coveted product.
Once you've experienced a Sheki halva-making masterclass, take time to wander through Sheki’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town. The area is home to historical landmarks, museums, cosy cafes, and artisan shops, all inviting you to make the most of your visit
