Lankaran grandmothersperform Talish folklore
There is probably no Azerbaijani who is unware of the folklore and dance ensemble ‘Neneler’ (‘Grandmothers’) from the village of Separadi in Lankaran, also known as the ‘Lankaran Grandmothers.’ Members of the ensemble perform Talish and Azerbaijani folk songs and dances. When it was first formed, the group had four members and operated under the name ‘Bajilar’ (‘Sisters’) since they were as close to each other as real sisters. The renaming of the group to ‘Grandmothers’ was suggested in 1997 by National Leader Heydar Aliyev during a visit to Lankaran.
The performers liked this idea, and from that year on the ‘Sisters’ became the ‘Grandmothers’. The Neneler collective is not only known in Azerbaijan but also in other countries around the world. They frequently receive invitations to festivals and events at the national level, where they avidly participate. Although the group performs more than 100 songs, they are best known for the song ‘Ay Lolo.’ This song received the ‘Grand’ award in 2012.
