cultural programin Lankaran
The city of Lankaran was the center of the Lankaran Khanate in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Lankaran Museum of History and Local Lore, housed in the Khan’s Palace, showcases a collection that covers the Lankaran Khanate as well as other historical periods of the region. The palace, built in 1913, was built by European architects at the order of Mir Ahmed Khan, a descendant of the Khan. The museum also features many examples of local art, along with objects and tools related to the Bronze Age. The building itself is an integral part of the museum: the mansion, built in 1913 in a style combining modern and national elements, was the tallest building in the city, and offers stunning views of the Caspian Sea and the Talysh Mountains.
You can also visit the house-museum of Hazi Aslanov, the only Azerbaijani who was twice awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his bravery during the Great Patriotic War, especially in the battles of Stalingrad, located on one of the quiet streets in the city center. Music and art lovers can participate in cultural events organized at the Lankaran State Drama Theater. Be sure to include the fortress's tower on your visit to Lankaran's historical sites. According to official records, the area of Lankaran Castle was twice the size of Baku’s Icherisheher Castle. Surrounded by high walls, Lankaran Castle had two towers. Two towers, which were part of the fortress walls, demolished in 1813, still hold a special place among the historical monuments of Lankaran today. One of the towers functions as a lighthouse, while the other was once used as a prison. Joseph Stalin was imprisoned in this building before the revolution.
