A Unique Galleryin the Heart of Kish
At first glance, YER might look like nothing more than an ordinary courtyard in Upper Kish, tucked away at the foot of the mountains. Spend a little more time here, though, and you start to notice that it is something quite different. This is where photographer Sanan Aleskerov has created YER, a small gallery where he displays his own work.
The idea behind YER was simple: Sanan wanted a place where he could share his photographs and, at the same time, invite people to see the world through his eyes. There are no formal gallery walls or the usual exhibition setting here. Instead, the photographs sit naturally alongside everyday life, the mountains and the quiet surroundings of Kish.
Even the name has a story. In Azerbaijani, “yer” can mean land, place or spot — a fitting name for a gallery so closely connected to its surroundings.
Sanan’s photographs come with a wealth of international experience. He has taken part in more than 50 international exhibitions in 12 countries, with solo exhibitions held in Azerbaijan, Georgia, France, the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan. His work can also be found in museums and private collections in different parts of the world.
In 2012, he participated in the Fly to Baku Art Project, organised by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow and Rome. His photographs were also shown in the Azerbaijani pavilions at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and 2013.
Today, YER remains a small gallery with a very personal character. You come here for the photographs, but you may stay for the atmosphere — a quiet courtyard in the mountains, a conversation with the artist’s perspective and the chance to look at a familiar place through a different lens.
