A small museumrich in history
In the centre of Balakan, just a short walk from the Juma Mosque, you will find the home of Professor Akif Mammadli. A professor at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, he has spent years collecting objects that tell the story of Balakan, from its history to the everyday life of its people. What began as a personal collection gradually grew into a small museum within his home.
Professor Mammadli himself welcomes visitors and takes them around the house, sharing the stories behind his collection. Old documents and coins sit alongside traditional jugs, farming tools, household objects and a tambur, each offering a glimpse into the region’s past.
There is another side to life here, too. Professor Mammadli keeps bees and grows strawberries, persimmons and apples, while laurel trees grow in the garden. A visit therefore offers more than a look at historical objects — it is also a chance to discover Balakan’s gardening and agricultural traditions.
Those who wish to stay longer can spend the night here and continue their exploration of Balakan the next day. The experience can also include live tambur music, with local musicians invited by the host to perform for guests and share the sound of this traditional instrument.
