the show of toleranceSt. George’s Church
Known as one of the leading multicultural countries in the world, Azerbaijan is home to a wide variety of ethnicities who have settled and lived here for hundreds of years in peace, calm, mutual respect and trust. Historically, Azerbaijan has given great emphasis to the preservation and building of historical and religious monuments. The St. George's Church, an iconic landmark in Gakh, is one of the places of worship where the Christian heritage is preserved.
This lovingly preserved white church with a stone bell tower and surrounding courtyard was constructed in the mid-19th century and belongs to the local Ingiloy community. The interior is dominated by bright, colourful walls and ceilings adorned with paintings illustrating important religious scenes, while outside the well-maintained gardens offer scenic views of the nearby mountains. Today, the site comes to life during significant Christian orthodox ceremonies all year round which Ingiloys come to worship and light candles for their wishes. The church is relatively new compared to others in the region, however the level of detail in its restoration as well as its lovely garden setting make it a very worthwhile visit for visitors to Gakh.
