Lerik cavesawait explorers
Nestled among mountains, Lerik District in the southern region of Azerbaijan is a must-visit destination. The ancient caves situated in the Zuvand area of Lerik, perched 75-100 metres above the bed of River Zuvandchay, offer a glimpse into the district's natural history. Buzeyir Cave, located atop the majestic Delikdash Peak of the Talish Mountains, is named after nearby Buzeyir village and is considered a very early human settlement. Artefacts found in this cave date back to the Paleolithic Period. Access to these and other nearby caves is possible only on foot, requiring specialist attire due to the steep and rocky terrain. Visitors are recommended to seek assistance from local guides. Interestingly, even during the hottest summer days, the temperature inside the caves does not exceed 15°C. These areas are also ideal for spotting rare bird species, including the White-throated Robin, the Pale Rock Sparrow and the Crimson-winged Finch.
