heritage of historyDiri Baba Mausoleum
Diri Baba Mausoleum, built in 1402 on the order of Shirvanshah Ibrahim I, is regarded as one of the gems of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school. This two-stored building, located in the Gobustan city, built on a slope of mountain, holds an important place within Azerbaijan architecture due to the originality of its architectural style, the uniqueness of construction composition and its close relationship with the environment.
The Mausoleum can be categorised as a group of domed tombs. The shared features of these structures in this group are the presence of a square-shaped wall in the domed hall. Medieval travellers such as Adam Olearius, Cornelis de Bruyn, and Evliya Chelebi mentioned that the mausoleum was once the home to a highly respected sheikh who lived at the end of the 14th century. This mausoleum was built after his death. The monument gained widespread fame due to the mysterious stories about him that circulated after the sheikh's death.
As the Diri Baba Mausoleum lies along the historic Silk Road, it has long served as a place of pilgrimage for travellers and traders over the years, and its fame spread to neighbouring countries.
