Synopsis:
“If Not That One, Then This One” is a play that sharply criticizes the social and domestic relationships of Azerbaijani society in the early 20th century, particularly the prioritization of money and social status over love.

The story begins when Gulnaz’s father, Rustam Bey, falls into debt. In search of a solution, he decides to marry off his daughter to the wealthy Mashadi Ibad in exchange for money. However, Gulnaz is in love with a young man named Sarvar and wishes to marry him instead. Her father’s decision, driven by financial desperation, highlights the injustice in society and how human values can be reduced to mere commodities.

In the end, all conflicts are resolved: Gulnaz marries Sarvar, and Mashadi Ibad ends up marrying the servant girl Sanam.

Ultimately, “If Not That One, Then This One” combines both comedic and tragic elements, holding a mirror to the past of Azerbaijani society and emphasizing once again that love, freedom, and human dignity are more valuable than wealth or status.
