Azerbaijan has announced the implementation of a one-year unilateral visa-free policy for Chinese citizens, marking a significant step towards deepening the partnership between two countries.
Following a joint statement by China and Azerbaijan on the establishment of a strategic partnership, this decision was adopted on July 3rd, 2024 at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. This initiative not only underscores the rapid advancement of bilateral relations but also opens new opportunities for collaboration across diverse sectors.
In recent years, Azerbaijan has emerged as a highly sought-after travel destination for tourists from China, in part due to its convenient flights, easy visa procedures, and reputation as a dynamic cultural and business hub. Arrivals of Chinese travellers to Azerbaijan during the first half of 2024 has increased by 2.4 times compared to the same period in 2023. The added convenience for Chinese tourists is the visa-free regime and direct flights to Beijing and Urumqi from Baku.
Azerbaijan fascinates with myriads of tourism attractions from the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Walled City of Baku, the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, the Sheki Historic Centre, newly inscribed Khinalig village, 'Köç Yolu' Transhumance Route, to the nature wonders in the Gabala city. Nestled amidst the breathtaking Caucasus Mountains, Gabala offers a serene retreat with its thermal springs, pristine lakes, and invigorating outdoor activities. Cosmopolitan capital Baku boasts a tapestry of city experiences, from museums and galleries to chic bars featuring local wines and delicacies, and an array of restaurants offering traditional and international cuisines. Additionally, Azerbaijan's rich MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) offerings make it an ideal destination for hosting events of all scales. The country features a 5-star Baku International Airport, rated by Skytrax, a plethora of chain hotels, and versatile venues such as the iconic Flame Towers. Facilities such as Baku Congress Centre and Heydar Aliyev Centre further enhance Azerbaijan's appeal, providing museums, exhibition complexes, and multimedia conference rooms for international conferences and events.
