A philosophical drama based on the novel “Bash” by People’s Writer Elchin

“Bash” tells the story of the conquest of the South Caucasus at the beginning of the 19th century by imperial troops led by Russian General Tsitsianov, of Georgian origin. The plot of the play centers on Tsitsianov’s beheading in Baku and the sending of his severed head to Fath-Ali Shah Qajar, followed by tense moral and political events.

The metaphysical “journey” of Tsitsianov’s head unfolds across a vast geography — the khanates of Azerbaijan, the kingdoms and principalities of Georgia, Russia, and the Qajar Empire — portraying the characters and historical circumstances of the era. The play offers a new and different interpretation of history in the geographical space where these events occurred.

The director’s main aim is to depict the psychological landscape and gallery of characters, to show how the Eastern individual, in critical moments during the Russian Empire’s conquest of the khanates, stood against external power and expressed himself in times of choice.

The stage director of the production is Honored Art Worker, State Prize laureate Mehriban Alakbarzadeh.
